Lucinda, YOU are amazing! Sleeping under the stars in a park with wild animals?! I think I may have even paid the lodge fee myself to avoid doing that...!! But it sounds like you had a great adventure! The plane we hitchhiked back on flew us over the beautiful Ngorogoro Crater - which was a lot better value than the $150 transit fee for the bus where we didn't even get to see it!

You are amazing Alice! Reading of your journeys, I would have been quite happy in the air-conditioned bus!!
However your blog has brought back my fond memories of my time in Tanzania - before going to university. We camped in the Serengeti - the tents had leaked the night before when were in the Masai Mara, so for the rest of the trip we slept out under the stars - and I was more agitated by the insects than the potential lions! Foolish or what? Nowadays one would fear poachers too. We also had to rush to the gate to avoid another day's park fees. Plus ca change.
However the risk was worth it to see the African dawn, especially if combined with the view of zebras and giraffe grazing. We camped on the Ngorogoro crater, a dust bowl in Lake Manyara (I particualrly remember the night life insects there) Arusha - where we met up with everyone who was about to, or had just, climbed Kili.
And at the end, sleeping on the beach outside Dar and being woken by children bearing fresh avocados and bananas for us. Their children are probably entertaining you now!
