Hollywood, LA
18th - 19th November
Hollywood, unlike Vegas, only has the effect of disgusting you without any amazement, which somehow you weren’t expecting even though everyone you met told you LA was a hole! However in proclaiming that, we realise a few of our friends on our message board did actually like LA/California so there must be nice areas but certainly where our hostel was located was not! The Hollywood strip was disappointing to say the least - it is in fact just stars on the pavement surrounded by dodgy stores and even dodgier people! We did find one ‘diamond in the rough’ however; there was a surprisingly quaint little farmers market one day where for the first time we felt remotely safe.
We spent most of our time in Hollywood planning how to get out of it. We wanted to drive up the pacific highway to San Francisco but we decided it was too risky and expensive. Plus we discovered the lovely Greyhound bus, which almost went up the coast but was a bit too far to get a decent view. For anyone going to America, DO NOT GO BY GREYHOUND!! It was so inviting as it is so cheap and you think “it’s just a coach what can go wrong, it’s just quite a long journey, we’re used to it by now” – famous last words! Anyway the journey wasn’t too painful in saying that, apart from the odd dodgy person and grumpy bus drivers, but it’s the trip to Seattle that was a nightmare – see the next journal! It’s definitely worth paying twice the amount of money for the train even though it’s not really any quicker. We didn’t feel too bad about missing out the towns that we stopped off at in between apart from Santa Barbara looked lovely but it’s renowned for being expensive.
