We really enjoyed our 3 days in the Blue Mountains. The first night we stayed in Katoomba, a very quaint town, in a quirky hotel which was straight out of the 1930s. We hiked along some pretty wet and muddy walking trails the next day, (quite a contrast to the Red Centre), which took us from cliff top level down hundreds of steps, past waterfalls and very thick foliage. We wouldn't have had time to climb back up via the steps before our car park ticket ran out, so we decided to use the 'world's steepest railway' back to the top. I didn't realise till we got on, that the incline is at an angle of 52 degrees, and you go up backwards, so you feel like you're going to fall out of your seat and slide head first down the cliff! I had to hook my arms around the rail behind my seat to hold on! I think I may have frightened the couple in the seats in front with my shrieking, as they looked a bit alarmed, whereas Tony of course didn't make any fuss at all, and gave me one of his 'what on earth is wrong with you?' looks!
We spent the next 2 nights in a gorgeous B&B which we stumbled accross in Wentworth Falls whilst trying to find the tourist information office. It had stunning views over the cloud-filled valley and a bathroom with a jacuzzi bath. We had a glass of complimentary champagne on arrival and were told to help ourselves to sherry and port later, which we did, as it would have been rude not to! We spent our last full day at the Featherdale wildlife park, which may be cheating, but I didn't want to leave Australia without seeing the big 5 native animals, and we had run out of time for trying to see them in the wild. The animals are very tame as they're hand-reared, and I was very excited to stroke a Koala ( ok, so it was asleep, but they do sleep for 20 hours a day!) as well as lots of kangaroos and wallabies, some with Joeys in their pouches! We saw a Tasmanian devil, emus, Cassowary birds, and echidnas, as well as lots of reptiles and an enormous saltwater crocodile. We have lots of lovely photos when we get the chance to upload them.
So, that was it. Our time in Aus was over. Back to Sydney airport, and off to Hong Kong !! ....
