Xian, small compared to Beijing....set inside ancient city walls, with a bell tower at the centre. The city is on a grid, and according to my guide full of thieves - but like anywhere, keep your head on, act sensibly and you'll do just fine. Stay away from North St for this reason. South St is Golden St with all the posher shops and businesses, West is the Muslim quarter and East, where i stayed, is general shops.....shops, shops, shops....they're everywhere....and restaurants. Came here to visit the Terracotta warriors which are located about an hour and a half away by bus, not too much else here otherwise. Feels more 'authentic' than Beijing but thankfully still tourist-y enough so one can get around without any Chinese. Make the effort, obviously, but be assured you can get by.

China. The land of ''One World. One Dream'' slogans, old people carrying sacks asking you for your water bottle empty or full, babies and toddlers wearing trousers with a gaping big hole at the bottom (presumingly to make going to the toilet easier) dumplings, bikes, gawping eyes, electric buses, overweight men pulling their tops up to just below the nipples, stampeads of vechicles, taxi men saying ''no,no,no'' before you have even attempted to say anything. And, a language that reminds me of when I was 5 and thought if I talk really fast and sound as if I am either gargling constantly or a hen, I might actually be speaking French, German, Indian or any other language in the world.
