One thousand apologies everyone. We can hardly believe that nearly a month has passed since last we blogged!
So, September is upon us and the seven month milestone has passed leaving us three short months til we return to Blighty. I think our time in Australia has been a comfort following the arduous Asian culture, however it has also served as a reminder of what we're missing at home I feel.
We are now at the end of our stay in Australia, we fly to Auckland on Saturday, and it will be missed, especially Melbourne where we've now spent so much time! I suppose what you're really after is a little insight to that time though, so with no further ado, permit me to take you back to our return to the Melbourne Metro YHA following a tremendous trip along the Great Ocean Road...
Arriving back we immediately started the job hunt, sending CVs here, there and everywhere. We also advertised our dearest Brucie for sale. We also set about finding alternative accommodation - ideally a share house/flat affair.
Very quickly indeed, Katie had a response from a recruiting agency who promptly placed her in an engineering company as a technical secretary. 'Deja Vu!' I hear you cry? Well, it seems likely that the six months spent at an engineering company as a technical secretary before we left somewhat helped her cause. So, for the last month Cooper has been 'bringing home the bacon' while I have been a 'kept man', a situation I honestly tried to avoid...although, I am beginning to see it's advantages!
With that 'bacon' we decided to attend some Aussie Rules Football at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, or 'AFL at the G' as Aussies must refer to it, for to waste time uttering an entire word, phrase, or even acronym would be criminal here! We chose to watch a game between Essendon Bombers and Brisbane Lions. We(I) chose to support the Bombers for reasons that were threefold. (1) Essendon is a suburb of Melbourne and ergo the 'local' team. (2) Brisbane was a boring city that we didn't like all that much, and (3) I liked the team colours!
While we were waiting for the car to sell and to find another place to live Katie heard from a university pal, Kim. It turns out Kim has been living in Australia more or less since we graduated, and now based in Melbourne we of course got together for a drink. A few days later we were all enjoying Pimms on a rooftop in the Melbourne sun and Kim happened to mention a friend of his who had a room that we might be able to rent. Exciting news we thought and although there was a crossed wire or two, we have now spent a fortnight at 55 Carter Street, Middle Park, Melbourne.
We are cohabiting with Sam, a Kiwi studying Graphic Design in Melbourne, and Mark, an English teacher, though also a stereotypical 'Aussie dude'! Although the area Middle Park is distinctly affluent, our place is distinctly not. We are happy here though, not least as the rent is precisely a quarter of our board at the hostel!
Bruce remains unsold meanwhile, and although it will be a sad day when we part ways, we are keen to pass him on, ideally to a loving family, alternatively, to the highest bidder!
I think that brings you all up to date with our activities. We will endeavour to update you more frequently from now...we've just been a little busy in our spare time, we are now avid fans of The West Wing having discovered Season One on DVD in our new place of residence.
We were delighted to hear of the birth of Stanley Unwin on August 14th and hope the Nixons, the Broomheads, the Coopers, the Meeks and Hayley and Morten enjoyed their holidays!
Love to all
Nick and Katie
