So apparently I have some catching up to do again, but it seems to always be that way.
The week thus far... So its been a pretty good week, classes are a lot more work than what I had thought initially. When I signed up for a summer study abroad I thought more along the lines of, "oh, how fun, a 5 week trip!"...Yea right...I am in class for like 8 hours a day, and as if that isn't enough, I get the honor of doing lots of homework during my free time during the week, and taking midterms already. The good news is that my spanish class will be half over as of tomorrow, so i have that to look forward to, bad news, I have to take a midterm tomorrow, blahh...
I was blessed this week with the oppurtunity to experience the Costa Rican health care system. Prior to leaving the States, I had a slight inkling that perhaps I was getting an ear infection. Well, apparently I was right. On Wednesday afternoon I talked to my resident director Jorge, and let him know that my ear did not feel very pleasant. So we decided to go to the clinic, and get it checked out. It was lucky for me that he came with, because only about half the people spoke English very well, so he served as a sort of translator for me. Now normally when I get an ear infection, I get given just a prescription and sent along on my merry way. But no, I was instead given a lovely shot, and why not make it a shot in my butt. Never in my life can I remember having to have a shot in the butt, it has always been in the arm, but here, I was told to lay down on the table and present myself to the nurse. So after that lovely and humiliating experience I was given a prescription and eardrops to use until it gets better.
Last night was a lot of fun, as me and the other AIFS program students went to the Jazz Cafe. This is a nice place up in San Pedro where they have different types of music every night, and last night was a Celtic band. I never would have thought I would be sitting in a cafe in San Jose Costa Rica listening to a Celtic band, it was really quite strange. But we had an awesome time, the band was really good, and so was the wine. We tried a couple different red wines, one was a 2006 Merlot from Castillano del Diablo in Chile, and the other an Italian 2004 Chianti, both very nice wines.
But yea , nothing too exciting to relate at this point, due mostly to the fact that during the middle of the week I have to endure the drudgery and boredom of 8 hours a day of class, and do homework during my evenings. The awesome thing is, that tomorrow at 1 I leave for Manuel Antonio National Park, which is located on the Pacific Coast near Quepos, and is known for its amazingly beautiful beaches and abundant wildlife, particularly monkeys and sloths. Also something that I find very exciting, tomorrow on our way to the national park we are stopping at Rio Tarcoles, where we can see the Costa Rican crocodiles, some of which can measure up to 18 feet long!!!
So, this is my last entry till I return from my weekend trip, hope you enjoyed this recent installation and look forward to more pictures!!
