Hi Guys,
So I'm finally in Hong Kong but I have a week to update you on first!
Last time I wrote we were in Yangshou and planning to leave at 3pm for a cookery class. First we went to a market to see all the local food but there were dogs there so I waited outside. Everyone walked in all confident and came out crying so that was a pretty bad way to start off our class. We drove into the countryside where the cookery school was. First we would watch the teacher cook something and then we'd all have a try. We cooked 5 meals altogether, egg dumplings with pork filling, egg plant, spinach, steamed chicken and fried pork. It was all really frantic because you have to do it really quickly, we were all so hot as well. The food was really amazing though and so easy to cook so I'll definitely be trying out my new recipes when I get home.
The guesthouse was next door to the school so afterwards we spent the night relaxing there. It was very basic and our room was more like a dungeon. It was right up in the mountians too so there were bugs everywhere! We were all terrified! When me and Eilidh tried to go to bed there was a frog thowing itself against out bedroom door trying to get in which everyone found very funny!
On Wednesday we went for a bike ride. It was such a hot day so everyone was dying with the heat. The ride was pretty scary because it was over dirt tracks and on tiny little path ways, I was sure I was going to fall off. One oart was too dangerous so we had to push our bikes for 2 km which was hell because of the heat. We stopped off in a little village for a break and the toilet was in a pig sty! It was so funny because I was looking around to see where it was and in between 2 pits of pigs was a squat toilet but when you go to sit down they all run over for a look!!
After a few hours of riding we stopped off for some lunch and our local guide showed us around the village where he grew up. His old house was so basic that they practically lived outside, we were all very quiet when we left because we had been moaning loads about our room but it was so much better than hsi old house. Then we carried on with the bike ride for another few hours back to the hostel. The views were all really amazing.
That night we were all sitting around and eating dinner then this huge cray fish type of creature started crawling towards us. It was so weird, the owner siad it must have crawled out of the river. Neil (guy from the grouo) picked it up to take it to Steve's room because he is terrified of all bugs. Steve went mad screaming at him, it was so funny.
Thursday - we were up and ready to leave pretty early. First we had to get a bus to the station to leave our backpacks behind because we had 2 days of hikinh ahead of us. Then we got a bus into the mountains to an area called Longji terraces. When we arrived we had to trek for an hour up millions of steps. It was an absolute killer because of the heat, everyone was dying. We eventually made it though and it was really amazing. The mountians are made of up tons of rice fields that have been built up on steps.
We were suppsoed to be doing a trek the next day for 5 hours but because of the heat our tour guide made it optional so luckily I got out of it! Most of the group still did it but me, and the other lazy girls in the group jumped at the chance of getting the bus instead. So the next mroning we left them to hike and we met them later at the next guesthouse. That night we saw a cultural show at our guesthouse. It started off pretty boring but then we had to join in and it was hilarious. We all had to join hands and one person was blindfolded in the middle and had to try and catch someone. We kept on breaking the circle though and the women were getting angry at us. Then finally one guy caught our guide and they had to do this weird wedding ritual. It was all really surreal! Afterwards there was literally nothing to do because we were up in the mountians so we ended up playing cherades for hours!
Saturday - we didn't leave Longji until 2pm and everyone was so bored and knackered. Then we just had a long day of travelling. There was loads of buses to catch and then our last overnight train together. We weren;t all in the same room for the first time so me and Eilidh were with a Chinese family, we tried to speak to them but it wasn't really happening! The mum snored sooo loadly that night I thought I might have to suffocate her!
The next morning we were on the border of Chian and HK. We got off the train and had to walk for ages to get to the border, my shoulders were being ripped off by my backpack. Me and Neil left the group behind to try and get there quicker. We were hystercal by the end of it because we were in so much pain, we just couldn't stop laughing! We met the others and got the train for an hour into HK, then checked into our room.
Straight away me and Eilidh went out to get me a camera, the prices in Hong Kong are so cheap for electronics so we were getting very excited about all the stuff we could buy! I bought a camera for 100 pounds and then we had to go straight back to get ready for dinner. It was our last group meal that night and everyone was so drunk. We went for dinner first and then back to the hotel to drink. It was a sunday night so it wasn't very busy when we got out but there was 15 of us so it was ok. We spent the whole night in an irish bar and everyone was unbelievably drunk!! That night we were getting a taxi home but the driver didn't understand us so took us off to Hong Kong island which is ages away it was all very confusing! We should of realsied that we were going the wrong way when we went in a tunnel for 10 mins I suppose!
The next day, we had to check out of our nice room and head to a crappy cheap place because we started paying for our own accommodation again. Me and Eilidh had a room in a really rough builidng, it was full of Africans and Indians. I don't really know why they all lived in that building! That day we went with the rest of our group to Victoria peak which is really high above Hong Kong so you can get a great view. We were all pretty hungover and knackered so after that we went for dinner at the hard rock cafe and then to the cinema to see Batman. There us a part of the film when he is in Hong Kong so that was pretty exciting. That night when we got back to the hostel me and Eilidh were really scared because we had to go in the lift with creepy men and then we ran up the stairs and tried to get in our room really quick but we couldn;t get in the room and there was loads of guys watching us so we freaked ourselves out. The next morning we got up at 7am, packed our bags and checked into a lovely hotel for a lot more money but we didn't care.
After an exciting morning we went to disneyland. It was such a fun day, as soon as we got there we had photos with goofy, pluto, mickey and minnie. Then we bumoed into the others and spent the day going on rides with them. They all left at 6pm but we wanted to see the fireworks so stuck around until 9pm. We were there for 12 hours altogether so we were totally shattered by the end of the day!
Today we haven't done anything, it has been a day of little jobs that everyone has put off for weeks. I have finally uploaded some pics but the one cd that had a crack in it is my great wall and terracotta army pics and the only pics that I had managed to get off my stolen camera so I'm pretty annoyed by that!
We are going to a random restuarant tonight which serves food in pretend squat toilets and the seats are normal western toilets! We are pretty mental! Eilidh leaves tomorrow and then I leave for Delhi on Firday morning. I'm pretty scared now, I don't want to leave everyone behind!
Hopefully speak again soon but it is hard enough finding the net in China so I think India will be impossible!
Miss you xxx
