Lake Wanaka/ Queenstown -> Christchurch
On the road again we stopped for a night in Lake Wanaka... well at Lake Wanaka not actually in it despite attempts from the dodgy brakes! The lake is famous for the reflection of the green and snowcapped mountains in its waters. We rocked up at a large hostel called the 'Purple Cow' and enjoyed a stunning view from the terrace over the lake. More importantly we both had a calling, and that was from the world famous adrenaline fueled crazy place of Queenstown... was jumping out of a plane not enough? We stayed at a party hostel/ mad house in the center of town and met up with our adrenaline addicts from the skydiving in Motueka. After using up our 2for1 drinks vouchers in the hostel bar we all headed out for a 'cultural' experience that consisted of drinking cocktails out of tea-pots... how english, at the 'World Bar' (pictures pick up that story fairly well!). So the next morning feeling pretty bad with the tea-pot in the hostel kitchen giving us flashbacks of the night gone we decided bungy jumping was the only way to get rid of this hangover. There are too many options in Queenstown for those wishing death or death of a hangover, we chose the first and oldest bungy bridge with a river flowing under it. I opted to die first so Petra could happily video the event (mainly for insurance purposes!), I can safely say it was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. You stand there waiting, watching everyone in front of you freeze, panic, cry, you name it they did it which was really not helpful! I asked to be 'dipped'/dunked into the water as I thought it would be the only way to bring me back to consciousness after the jump! Walking the plank you stand there and that moment is the hardest moment, actually making yourself jump off a bridge with nothing but a towel tied arround your legs. You can all see from the videos when they go up that I won a medal for the quickest jump and Petra for the best audio! Queenstown was great and not only about adrenaline sports, for example there are the most amazing views for the top of its mountains, lakes, rapids and Fergburger!
Milford Sounds was our next stop, even more spectacular lakes and a drive that takes you through a mountain and then the road is surrounded by huge rock faces as high as the eye can see with waterfalls racing down ever 5meters or so, we have never and will never see anything like that again. Its 130Km up and down mountains from the nearest town and such a big tourist attraction we thought there would be a town with ATM and petrol station....WRONG! It was pissing it down with rain and we had merely a quarter of a tank of petrol left and no cash...hmmmm! Option 1 was to try and see if our Nissan would run on beer or more likely Soy sauce, Option 2 was to attempt the mountainious drive 130km back to the nearest town, we opted for Option 2 first which would be sortly followed by Option 1 should it fail! By the skin of our teeth and with 'Dasky' the Nissan sipping its last taste of petrol we literally rolled into town sporting massive victory smiles. Our journey from here took us south and more south to the most southernest point of NZ, there was nothing to see so a massive push we ended up back on the east coast and at Dunedin (a Scottish town which is meant to be based exactly on Edinburgh). We were knackered and so spent the next 3days watching Lord of the Rings (trying to spot the places we had seen where it was filmed!), oh and walked up THE steepest road in the WORLD!
Rested and with our Gollum (from Lord of the Rings) impressions on top form we hit the road up the east coast to the town of Oamaru. Swaggers hostel was our new home for a 2nights with the nicest, crazy and also slightly unstable woman owner who we will explain about in a moment. Oamaru is another town where European settlers first landed, with some building still sporting the English flag and even a gentlemens club, its also more famous for its penguins, blue and yellow eyed penguins. Try and imgaine this, a club on the front surrounded by a railway line then the harbour, at night 100's of little blue penguins surf in on the waves and walk into and around the town and the club which is conveniently named the 'penguin club'!! When we arrived the crazy and nice hostel owner took us out in her car and showed where to come in the evening to see the blue penguin colony and yellow, she even showed us how to break into the stadium so we didnt have to pay the $40 to watch the penguins come out of the sea! That evening, armed with a torch, war paint and for one of us a bright pink jacket we attempted and succeeded in our mission, to save $40 and see the penguins! We watched them surf in and climb up the rocks then headed off with them on their journey into the town for some food and beer, it was so surreal I still cant believe it happened! From Oamaru we drove back towards Christchurch stopping at the french fishing town of Akaora, first found by the French and then taken over by the English, but the french flags still fly and every building has a french name! Again another magical event happened, we went swimming with dolphins, the Hector dolphins are the smallest in the world and there are only 7,000 remaining. We went out (after a night of snow in the mountains!) in our wet suits, the guides spotted two dolphins and in the sea we went! Petra was given some stones to hit together under the water which gives some sort of mating signal because they all came over and started swimming around her! These creatures we so beautiful, friendly and playful we spent 45minutes in the middle of the ocean just playing and laughing with them, with them coming right upto your face and then blowing water out of their airholes!! We feel so priviledged to have had that experience in their natural environment. There are also a couple of great pictures of us, one with Petra's face and the other when someone shouted to me "Its behind you"!! The hostel called 'Bon Accord' was also cool and we drove the final 90km back to Christchurch giving a lift to a couple we met (Sophie from Canada and Anthony AUZ) there. This is really where the journey that was NZ ends, just under 4000Kms were driven, 20days, no breakdowns, Skydiving, Bungyjumping, Penguins, Seals, Dolphin swimming, a new president for NZ and the US... many many lifetime memories have been born over the last 20 remarkable days.
Zname svym filmovym zazemim, tucnaky a tucnakovsky club! Nase dalsi cesta vede do mist Mount Cook, a Lake Tekapo! Jsme znaveni lehli do postele a uz si planovali nasi dalsi cestu do mesta Akaroa! Nejvetsi turistickou atrakci a take duvodem proc jsme sem zavitali jsou delfini! Jeden z neuveritelnych zazitku, a jeden z nejlepsich dni!! Novy Zeland nam otevrel oci v mnoha smerech a my jsme vdecni za tuhle zivotni zkusenost! P & R
