After a top new years on the beach of Koh Samui surrounded by endless fireworks it was time to leave Thailand. We had decided to get into Cambodia it would be necessary to hit Bangkok for a few days first and get a bus from there, we never thought actually getting to Bangkok would be so stressful! Due to it now being the 3rd of January every man and his chicken and backpacker was leaving Ko Samui to get back to work, this meant no seats available on any buses from Ko Samui and also we were told no seats anywhere to Bangkok. We had already extended our visa and it was about to expire. We had no choice but to leave Ko Samui get a pickup to the ferry and a local bus from the ferry to the neares town, from there we made it just in time to buy two tickets for the evening night bus to Bangkok! I must admit since spending two years in London, visiting cities was never a big highlight, Bangkok is another big city with Kho San Rd being populated by more tourists than locals. Tuk Tuk journeys were fun and we were lucky to have met a Thai man while looking around a nearby temple, he told us how much the Tuk Tuk's should be and even how to bargain! We learnt how to say "Pang Pai" which means "too expensive" from those two words we stopped paying 4times as much like every other tourist and starting paying about 70p for a journey around town. The next day we got up at 6am (early for us backpackers!) and took a tour to the floating markets....a huge market on water with people selling everything and anything from their little wooden long boats!! Great fun and very amusing! The time had come to leave Thailand but with the promise to return for a month of relaxation before we returned home, another uncomfortable night bus lay waiting to take us to Cambodia!

Emanuela I just got back from Thailand in March. We flew Eva Airlines, which was the cheapest we could find at the time. It was ptrety comfortable and the staff was nice. Since they are a Taiwanese airline, they lay over in Taiwan. You may find another airline that flies cheaper/direct if you leave from England. We flew from California. If you can speak Thai, or are going with someone who does, you can get your hotel when you get there. Hotels are generally cheap because of the exchange rate, which was about 38 baht to a US dollar (not sure how a dollar converts to pound, about double I imagine). If you book your hotel through a travel agent or online agency, you will pay about 3 or 4 times what you should. If you get there and speak only English, you will pay about twice what Thai people pay.We had to hop around Bangkok because my wife's family lives scattered about, so if you want, send me a note about where you are planning to go/see and I can recommend you some places to stay.
