I got a good, long, night sleep last night and felt refreshed this morning. Ellie and I got some pastries at a local bakery for breakfast and set off to Cawood. Cawood is the town where our ancestors, John Roodhouse and Jane Moses, emigrated from in the 1830s. I had been in contact with Margaret Brearley, the local historian and archeologist, and she agreed to meet with us. My Aunt Elise was the first to correspond with her and gave me her Information. We took the 30 minute bus trip south to Cawood where Margaret met us at the bus stop. We started our tour at the remains of Cawood castle and the large Garth (garden/open area) next to it. We then drove around Cawood seeing the land where Jane Moses lived and the fields that the Roadhouse’s owned. Margaret brought us back to her cool, old house where met her husband, Paul, and their two dogs, Fern and Holly. We hung out there for a while talking and then they served us lunch (great sandwiches and delicious scones!). Margaret brought out boxes of old Viking and Victorian pottery and bones that were found in various digs around Cawood. Ellie really liked that. Paul received the Order of the British Empire by the Queen and Prince Prince Phillip (on the same day as Mick Jagger!). The certificate was hung in their bathroom (signed!). We ended our time with Margaret and Paul by exploring the old Cawood church located across the street. We went inside and they pointed out some cool little things. They went back home (I think we tired them out!) and we explored a little more. While we were walking around the cemetery, we met David who lives across the street from the church as well. He was alumni of York, so he and Ellie had that in common. He shared with us a little more about Cawood. We then caught the bus and headed back to York. Once back in York we walked around the city center and saw the Shambles and the Minster. We walked back to Ellie’s place and rested ofor bit before heading to the city center by bus and eating at a Vietnamese restaurant Ellie had wanted to try. We were both tired so we called it a night.
