Classes have begun now, and so far, so good. We had a BBQ on Tuesday, and I tried a piece of kangaroo sausage. It tasted like most other specialty sausages; for all I know, it could have been deer. But then, I guess kangaroos are to Australians what deer are to us. There are more kangaroos in Australia than there are people. I have yet to see a kangaroo, though. I need to go on a safari, but I guess that will have to wait until summer. It's beginning to warm up here now. That's after record lows for Sydney, which occurred right after I arrived. I guess I have that effect.
After the BBQ, we had our first class. We have been given the task of coming up with an idea for our first movie by next week. I have no clue what I'm going to do. After class, we took a tour of the "dungeon" as they refer to it. It's located in the basement of one of the buildings on SCA's campus. It has not been rennovated and still looks as it did when the hospital was in operation. This area of the basement was for solitary confinement, and it is incredibly creepy. There are few lights down there, so in some rooms, you can't even see the faces of people standing right next to you. There is one long (very long) twisting, stone corridor that has no lights. We had to use our cell phones to make our way through until we found the dead end. It was very creepy, but very cool. As students, we have the freedom to film down there, which apparently is a great luxury since professional film crews have paid big bucks for access to the space. I'm not sure if I really have the need for the space, but I just might find myself using it just because I can.
After school, I went grocery shopping again. I finally decided to buy a kangaroo steak because I'm very curious to find out what it really tastes like (at least not as a sausage). I bought some that was pre-seasoned since I'm not sure what is best with kangaroo. I'm going to cook it this weekend on my mini George Foreman rip-off grill. I found it cheap at the general store in Norton Plaza. After I enjoy my kangaroo (well, at least I hope I enjoy it), I'll probably finally try one of these bakeries around here that are so luring. I definitely want to try some cannoli. They have three different varieties at one of the shops.
Today, I had my first class on the Camperdown campus of the university (or uni as they call it). Camperdown is the main campus that holds the quadrangle. It was very surreal for me today to walk on the historic campus. I can't tell you how exciting it was to walk through the quad knowing that I was part of Sydney's oldest university. Though it was built in the 19th century, it feels so much older from the beautiful Gothic revival architecture. Walking through the quad is like something out of Harry Potter. The building that I have my class in, though not nearly as cool as the quad, is still pretty impressive. I'm anxious to explore the rest of campus with my camera.
