Airlie Beach- 21st September 2007
Arrived in Airlie Beach tired and unhappy. Checked in to find that there was not enough beds in the room changed rooms to find out that there were enough beds so moved back to the first room. Plus the first room was nicer. Not a great start to the day. Unpacked went to the boat place to say we were here. Then spent the rest of the day at the Lagoon sunbathing. Had tea in the bar with Mindel an Australian girl who was about to go on the whitsundays and had 30 pairs of shoes with her. I really am not that bad! The hostel was looking after rugby and football teams who were on tour so the bar was rammed. I got my stomach pains so Kathy and I had an early night.
Saturday 22nd September.-Whitsundays
Got up checked out and trecked down to the harbour where we were greeted by Genene. Got to out boat which looke dslightly different to the photos but in fact once we set sail I realsied that I'm not a true backpacjker. The boat was lovely Derwent Hunter a proper sailing boat built in 1945. No sea sickness for me. Spent about 2 hours getting to Whitehaven Beach which was voted the third most beautiful beach in the world according to the National Geographic. The sand is made of silica which means it does not get hot and is soft like talc. Spent the afternoon there. The sand is made by two tetonic plates rubbing together and quartz granules are produced and washed onto the beach by the tides. I don't really understand but will get Hayley Wallen to explain it when I get back. Had a beautiful evening meal of pasta and fish and potatoes with veg. Genene is a very good cook. The deck hand was called Logan and the skipper called Richard. Went to bed feeling happy that I wasn't on a boat with 25 teenagers who were getting drunk. There were four of us in our cabin me Kathy, Rob and Patricia. Patricia is from Paris and Rob is from Oxford and had been travelling for 9 months. He had got divorced and sold the house and was travelling off some of the profit. We were the ones on the boat who were not there for romance as everyone else was in couples apart from Lucy who was the 8 year old girl. Everywhere you go in Oz people are in couples. Had a lesson from Richard on the stars and I still can't see the scorpion in the sky just a kite. Australia has the most beautiful night sky I've seen, admittedly I have only been to Europe and America but it's so clear and you can see stars flashing and stars are different colours. Not in Manchester their not!
Sunday 23rd Spetember 2007
Got up bright and early thinking it was like tour no one was up apart form the Crew. Breakfast was fresh fruit, cereal, toast and tea. A lovely start to the day. We set sail and went to I think Whitsuday Island. Went for a walk and Logan taught us about the history of the Islnd and how the Aboriginees were slaughtered. The view from the lookout was stunning like you see on the holiday programmes. Then we went sailing a bit more is where we got our attractive stinger suits and went snorkelling. It was quite busy as obviously other ships had "gone with mother nature". Enjoyed the snorkelling had tea and spent the rest of the evening getting to know the couples better. Got speaking to Lucy's Dad Rob who lives in Nz and has offered me accomodation if I'm in Harhey.
Monday 24th September 2007-
Got up late today thought it was a better idea to wait until everyone else was up (learnt from my mistake day previous). Had breakfast and went to a smaller bay again I can't remember but this was less busy and I think the snorkelling was better here. Really enjoyed my self and was sad to make my way back to Airlie Bay. Got back to the hostel and a table had been booked for us to have a meal. Kathy and I went down but only Rob, Hazel, Lucy, Rob and Patrice turned up which was pretty sad and annoying. However we got 1 jug of beer and 2 casks of wine so that made it a bit better. Had tea and Kathy was unwell so went to bed. I stayed out and went to Magnums and then home to bed prob about 12:00. Hardcore!
Tuesday 25th Spetember 2007- Chilled
Had a lie in went to McD's for breakfast and then lay on the beach with the German guys from our room and laughed about the strange old (70yrs old) man who snored far to loudly last night. The same man who stared at me for about 5 mins while I put suntan cream on. I have come to the conclusion he is not well which is great when you share a room with him. Then went to the lagoon swapped some books in the book store. And now I'm off to bed after being on the internet for approx 4 hours my wrist is starting to kill. We leave for Hervey bay tomorrow night on the overnight Greyhound. Set off at 8:05pm arrive 9:25am. Night night everyone I need to pack.
