Brisbane
Friday 5th October 2007- Brisbane
Arrived at the transit centre and had a nightmare on where to go to get picked up. For anyone who is going to Oz 2nd Floor gate 4 for Back packer pick up. My backpack is so heavy that I can't pick it up without help. I don't know how it is so heavy. Got to the hostel which was a Victorian building but I thought it was really beautiful. We were staying at the Palace the Embassy. The building was owned and built by the Salvation Army for those who lived in the country and wanted to go on holiday. The rooms were clean with massive ceilings so really cool. Unfortunately the toilet was down the corridor and not miles away but at 3:00 in the morning a bit of a pain. Anyway went off to meet Hazel at Bunk as she was leaving the following day. She showed me her hostel where we had tried to get in. Bunk was pretty cool, modern but her room was quite cramped. However the bar was cool, they had a pool and jacuzzi. Saw John who was again hungover. Hazel persuaded me it would be a good idea to go out that night as it was happy hour at her bar.
Went back to the hostel had a sleep and got ready to go out. Kathy and me went down to Bunks Bar Birdee Yum Yum and were greeted by rugby players on tour. Now I'm not prejudice but I have yet to meet a nice attractive Ozzie bloke. They are not like the men on Home and Away and Neighbours! Every bloke we meet is drunk whether it be 9:00am, 2:00pm or 10:00pm. I'm not sure how young Ozzie blokes hold down jobs. I know there must be some sobre, genuine, non chauvinistic ones but not sure where? Had a fun night with Hazel and her mates, Kathy went home as a Smirnoff Ice was $8.70. I nearly choked handing over my money. That was my last drink I got hungry headed for Mc D's and that was me for the night. I was tired and not drunk enough to be dancing!.
Saturday 6th October 2007- Museum and Art Gallery
Got up late and walked into the town. Managed to get talked into going on the city sites bus which was $20. Now this would have been good value if we had got up at 8:00 but hindsight is a marvellous thing. We went on a tour of Brisbane which was actually quite interesting. Got off at the look out point on Mt Coot Tha. I didn't realise Brisbane was quite so big. When your walking around it seems pretty compact. The tour took you around the city and Maurice gave us a bit of info about the different buildings. We hopped off at South Bank where the Cultural centre is. Started in the museum where there was a science exhibition on. Basically it was like Eureka but we had a great time with all the children trying out all the experiments. Then went around the rest of the museum which was interesting but not as fun. Section on the History of Queensland, Transport, the worlds animals and some ceremaincs from around the world. We were running out of time so we decided to go to the Art Gallery.
I enjoyed the Art Gallery a lot and didn't manage to see it all. There was some Aboriginal art and pieces from the 19th, 20th century. We left with the exhibition not having managed to see it all. Went back to the hostel had tea in the Down under bar. Nice steak but not as good as the woolshed. After tea we walked down to the river to get on the City Cat. We were determined to get our $20 worth out of our bus/boat ticket. Enjoyed the trip and were actually on the boat for 2 hours. Surprisingly more drunk Ozzie blokes talked to us this time they didn't come within 50 cm of us which was good. They were nice enough! The ticket inspector was laughing at us because we were cold and kept closing the door. We were explaining that in the day it is so hot that at night it seems so much more cold.
Walked back to the hostel but decided to go and watch the rugby game. Met a girl and lad who apparantly wern't together. He was a police officer who was goign to marry an English girl. I quote "I love English girls". And again another Ozzie bloke who comes up to you and thinks to speak to you his hand needs to be on your arse. What is that about! I came to the conclusion that this girl and boy were together but looking for someone to join them that night. They kept going up to groups of girls and then whispering to each other. Apart form the over friendly, drunk ozzie police officer had a good night especially being around cocky Ozzies who weren't so cocky at the end of the game.
Sunday 7th October 2007- Art Gallery.
Decided to get up and go and see the rest of the art work at the Art Gallery this was fun and because I'd left Kathy shopping in town I had time to spend on each piece of art. Then went to the gallery of modern art and saw an exhibition by Katharina Grosse "picture park". I do like modern art because its interesting but sometimes I do think I could do that. And becauase I'm not an artist I'm not convinced by all of the pieces. However I don't suppose the artist who makes 2.5 million per art piece cares whether I'm convinced. Got back to the room went for tea and walked around town. Somehow managed up at the cinema and went to watch "Ewan Almighty". What a funny funny film! Packed and bed.
