From Siem Reap we headed to Phnom Penh by bus which was quite painless. We arrive in the Capital late in the afternoon. Phnom Penh offers a completely different city atmosphere from that of Siem Reap. There is traffic everywhere and there seems to be no rules. This was our first experience in Southeast Asia at crossing the street while a dozen motorbikes attack you from all different directions! It didn't take us long to find a Guest House and by just pure luck we seem to have found the one place in Cambodia that is run by a team of gay Cambodian friends. Gay or straight, VIP Guesthouse is worth staying at. The staff is so friendly and they really made our stay in Phnom Penh memorable. At first we didn't want to make any assumptions but later it was quite clear.
Anyways after dropping off our bags we headed towards the Mekong River to grab some dinner. Our guide book recommended a restaurant called Friends which served tapas and all the proceeds went to help street kids. This restaurant was amazing and the food was great...for under ten dollars we had multiple dishes and it’s nice to know where your money is going. The streets are lined with beggars and although you know they could use the money you also see that the starving child that you feel sympathy for is the last one to see the money. Attached to the restaurant is also a shop where the proceeds again help to go to the education of street kids so we got caught up in there too. After dinner we headed back to the hotel to have a couple drinks. That is the other great thing about this guest house. That instead of a kitchen it has a nice bar. So we hung out with our hosts and threw back some drinks. We were then invited to go out dancing with our new friends. Not really sure if this was a wise choice we decided to go since everyone seemed to be genuinely nice and not trying to scam us. They ended up taking us to a club where they had a reserved room with an unlimited supply of beer, drugs and dancing in front of mirrors (shirts optional for the men). Not really sure what drugs were being passed around (probably x) since half our cure was puking off of them and we weren’t really about to take anything without knowing what it is and where they hell we were. So we enjoyed the free beer and entertainment. At some point they decided to tell us that they were all gay as if we didn't already know. They were worried we would think their dancing strange! It was actually a really good time everyone was so nice and it was fun to see how Cambodians party well at least gay Cambodians. I was told numerous times how handsome Brandon was and how lucky I was. Brandon loved it! We lasted until about 2am and then we thought it wise to head out before things got too out of hand. The next morning all the boys were passed out in the lobby of the hotel, barely coherent.
