Hey everyone! It's me again and I will have to update this more thoroughly when I get the time. I have to get to the other sife of Flagstaff in less than an hour from now so I will give you a quick update!
March 10th I went to Lake Mohave, which is about a 5 hour drive from Flagstaff. The purpose of the project here is to remove the Tamarisk (also known as Salt Cedar) tree from around the area. We were camping along the shore and it was very picturesque. My job role was to swamp the area by pulling trees away that had just been cut and dragging them across semi-arid, rocky terrain several metres away.. in the scorching heat. Well, it is really hot for me considering where I come from lol. My muscles are exhausted as we would do this for about 10 hours a day... early starts.... but it was all worth it :) By removing the Tamarisk we are giving native plants a chance to thrive as the Tamarisk is the more dominant. There is a history to how the Tamarisk ended up in Arizona... starting from the 1930's dustbowl period (drought) in America spreading down the South West, but I would have to check my facts before I start typing away... lol. After the trees were cut and then swamped... herbicide was applied to stop it from growing back. Quite ingenius lol.
There were 2 crews at the campsite, each in charge of their own food, washing up etc... so I have become semi-pro at camping (I wish). My tent was an absolute nightmare to set up, but hopefully it will go up for me next time with ease lol. We had great relaxing evenings with our headtorches on... cooking and cleaning in the dark is always fun! We even got to sit around the campfire and listen to one of the older volunteers from Texas (by the name of ATG) sing some country songs... under the stars and we even had a couple of nights to toast marshmellows... not to keen on them but it was the whole American camping experience! There are some awesome people at ACE that I have met so far, from all different walks of life. I am really excited to be here and share my experiences with you all!!!
I do have so much more to tell. I am keeping a written journal with me and will transfer all the rest with you guys as soon as I can. It's just so busy! Hopefully will be going Las Vegas this weekend with some friends which should be awesome.. plans should be discussed tonight. Hope you are all okay and do miss you all so much. Just loving America just a bit too much lol. Really hope to update you with a longer blog entry soon! Take care y'all lol.
