Hi again to everyone. Hope you've had a good week. We certainly have! Biggest news is the new addition to our travelling party, Kevin the VW camper van! He's a 1976 model with an air-cooled engine and lots of personality. Busy buying bits and bobs now to get him kitted out ready for our travels. We even went to a garage sale in Fremantle and picked up a couple of decent ice boxes (or 'Esky's' as the locals call them). Of course, as some of you may know, we were originally going to get a different camper, a Nissan Nomad but it was registered in NSW which meant a lot of problems for us so we gave it a miss.
So what else have we been up to? We had a go at getting some short-term jobs while in Perth but everywhere is looking for people to last through the summer so we're going to apply for some jobs in Melbourne for over Christmas.
We have also seen a few new places including Midland, the first major town in WA. There wasn't really much to see there as it's just a big shopping centre now but we did get to use the free internet at the library. We have also been to Mundaring, a small village in the Perth Hills with a dam and weir which provides water to Kalgoorlie mines via huge pipe lines running hundreds of kilometres. We went to the local pub there too where there was a country group called 'The Bush Band' playing. You can enjoy their version of 'Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport' in the video section, hopefully we can get it loaded up. It was nice to experience some traditional Aussie culture. We also finally got a glimpse of the local wildlife, including the Kangaroos and Parakeets! One of the 'roos let us get quite close, as you can see in the photos.
We've done a fair amount of the Perth coastline now, even though the weather hasn't been the best for it at times. Cottesloe is very pretty, and Trigg had some people surfing there despite horrible wind and rain. Yesterday we had our first proper beach day, spending our time at Scarborough and Brighton beaches, and even went for a swim and some body surfing. It was colder than we expected, even though we were in our wet suits! We went looking for surfboards too but didn't have much cash on us at the time. Hopefully we'll pick one up this week.
Irene's grandson Lynden has also been around for the last couple of days, it's been fun entertaining him and watching all his favourite films including 'Ice Age'! And 'Over The Hedge'!
We've been enjoying the food around here, the locals seem to love Italian food, especially 'Gelato', Italian Ice cream. We're working our way through the different flavours, and it'll probably take a while! We had our first Aussie BBQ at Irene's the other night - sausages, chops and steak. Yum!
We hope you enjoy the photos and that you're all well.
Love Laura and James xXx
p.s. Thanks for all the messages, it's good to hear from you all :-)
